Select Default Folders

You can pick the folders that Smartcrypt selects by default when you add or extract files, open an archive, or save a new archive for the first time. The folders that you pick are automatically selected when you open the related dialogs— Open Archive, Add Files, Extract Files, or Save As.

You are not forced to use the folder that is initially selected: you can pick a different folder in the dialog to use instead. But if there are folders that you often want to use or to start navigating from when you do these operations, you can set those folders to be selected by default in the dialogs.

To access the Folders page:

  1. Click the Application Menu.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Under Miscellaneous, select the Folders page.

You specify a default folder in exactly the same way for the Open Archive, Add Files, Extract Files, and Save As dialogs. The page provides identical controls for setting the default for each dialog. The procedure below describes the steps to set a default folder for the Add Files dialog. Use the other sets of controls to set default folders for the other dialogs in the same way.

To specify a folder for the Add Files dialog to propose by default:

1.  Select one of the following settings from the Default Compress/Add Folder drop-down menu:

Setting

Selects This Folder

Most recently used folder

The same folder selected last time in the dialog

My Documents folder

Your My Documents folder

Active archive folder

The folder that contains the current archive.

If the current archive is new and has not been saved to a folder yet, Smartcrypt opens the dialog to the system default folder.

System default folder

The current folder as determined by the operating system

Specified folder

The folder specified in the Folder field

2.  If you select Specified folder, the Folder field is enabled. Use the adjacent Browse button to select the folder you want to use by default.

Temporary Folder

When Smartcrypt adds or updates an archive, Smartcrypt saves temporary files to your disk.

For example, to update an archive, Smartcrypt copies the archive to a temporary folder, updates the copy, and copies the updated version back over the original. Then Smartcrypt removes the temporary files.

You can allow Smartcrypt to use your system's default temporary folder, or you can specify a different folder. If you create or update very large archives, and the drive that contains your system's default temporary folder is low on space, you might want to specify a temporary folder for Smartcrypt on a different drive.

To specify a temporary folder for Smartcrypt:

Use the Browse button beside the Temporary folder field to specify a folder for Smartcrypt to use.
